Week 85: August 11th-17th, 2024

It has been a while since I got myself a little treat, so in the chaos of the apartment hunt, I stopped at Coco Bomb. It is a small, super cute cafe in Linda Vista that specializes in coconut-related desserts and drinks.

Walking inside, I was greeted by a very cheerful woman behind the counter. As I looked around, I was surprised at how nicely they made a small space feel light and airy. I stared at the menu for a couple of seconds before a woman and her kid came through the door behind me. I let them cut me in line, since I didn't know what to order yet.

The woman was cheerful as well, and told me to get the mango sticky rice if I was craving something "perfect." She seemed to be a Coco Bomb regular, because she knew the workers and her kid went straight for the faux plants as if she already knew they were fun to mess with.

After letting the woman and her kid exchange their regular pleasantries with the workers behind the counter, it was finally my time to order. Usually, if I haven't chosen something by the time they've said "What can I get started for you?" I just blurt out what first comes to mind. This time I blurted out that I would like an iced matcha latte and also something called "coconut coffee."

I was also tempted to get some of the chips that I had been eyeing while waiting in line, but I decided only one (or two, if you consider both drinks....) treat was enough. I couldn't tell what flavor some of the chips were, but they looked intriguing.

There were so many options! The crab shaped one was fun!

The iced matcha was on the sweeter side, but that is just the way I like it. The coconut coffee was definitely just coconut water and espresso, so it wasn't my favorite. I still have it in the fridge and maybe I'll drink it tomorrow morning with some added sweet cream.

As I was leaving, I received a very cheery goodbye and an offer to try the ice cream or sticky rice the next time I come back. I love supporting small businesses, especially when the people working there are genuinely nice. The Coco Bomb Instagram account is here if you'd like to see more.

Since I've been so stressed about the apartment search, it was nice to get myself something sweet for a little pick-me-up between tours. It has been truly an exhausting few weeks, and there's no end in sight. I'm hesitant to count all of these apartment viewings as my Something New, because it would get boring to just regurgitate the extensive notes I have in my phone on each place I've seen. Most of my notes use very appealing descriptors like "stinky" or "old, weird," or my favorite, "too expensive." Hopefully things will get better as the year closes out and rent starts to go down during the holidays. If it doesn't get better, I will be needing many more treats.

See you next week.
