Week 81: July 14-20th, 2024
Sometimes trying new things turns out great. For example, I usually can find a lot of positive things to say about a new restaurant, even if it wasn't my favorite food. Of course, the worry a place could be hit or miss is always there, and unfortunately, this week's new spot was a miss. In a spontaneous evening trip to Sunset Cliffs, my boyfriend and I wanted to stop and get ourselves a treat before enjoying San Diego's famous oceanside views.
Since we were already on that side of town, a quick search on Maps showed surprisingly few dessert options in Ocean Beach. Eventually, our search led us to Yogurt Farm. I'll keep it brief, as I don't want to tarnish their reputation too much, but overall... we were not impressed. The garish wall colors were a bit jarring, and the setup inside was a bit confusing. First of all, no prices were listed anywhere, but many items, such as smoothies, frozen yogurt, and gelato, seemed to be available.
We initially thought the yogurt dispensers being out in the open and not behind the counter meant it was self-serve, like most other froyo places... but we were wrong. After we asked for two cups for yogurt, the guy came around the counter and did it himself. It was unclear which flavors were yogurt and which were gelato, so we played it safe and just got chocolate and strawberry. He didn't ask how much yogurt we wanted, and did not give us a chance to get any toppings, which was odd, because the price seemed to be based on weight.
The whole thing wouldn't have been so strange if the price of the two small cups of froyo with no toppings wasn't a whopping $18.82! For only two weight-based, not self-serve, strange vibes cups of frozen yogurt! I was appalled... but we paid, got out of there quickly, and tried to enjoy the world's most expensive frozen yogurt. It was decent, but not worth $9.41 for a small cup each. We still got to enjoy the sunset by the cliffs, though, which was nice.
In happier news, another fun part of July, apart from all the birthdays and the guaranteed sunny weather, is that San Diego celebrates Pride month now, and not in June! I'm pretty sure it is later than June because San Diego is the last city on the national Pride parade tour, but whatever the reason, it is great to celebrate the queer community well past June.
My friend Mel is part of her company's Pride committee, and through that, she has met many of the members of the Kiwanis of San Diego. Through them, we got invited to join Kiwanis during the organization's first time participating in the San Diego Pride Parade!
We met up with the Kiwanis club in the morning on Normal Street, which made us miss our friend Sam dearly (he used to live on that street before moving to Chicago).
We signed in and equipped ourselves with goodie bags and rainbow stickers to hand out. We were instructed to only hand items to the crowd, and to never throw things, since flinging items (as fun as it may be) may pose a safety risk.
The Kiwanis group was walking in the parade right before the San Diego Wave FC, the women's pro soccer team, which was pretty cool. The Wave had a "LFGSD" (Lets F***ing Go, San Diego!) set of rainbow balloon letters and got tons of cheers from the audience, which we sometimes pretended were for us.

Including the parade and our trek back to our cars, Mel and I walked over four miles in the hot San Diego sun. It was super fun to participate in the parade and pretend to be a celebrity for a couple hours.

We even made it briefly on the news!

The entire live coverage of the 2024 Pride Parade is here if you'd like to see it. I'm proud to participate in events like these and show support as an ally, not only in June and July but year round. It was heartwarming and wonderful to see hundreds, if not thousands, of people from all around San Diego and the rest of the country, come together to celebrate pride. It definitely made up for the disappointing froyo earlier in the week.
See you next week.
