Week 79: June 30-July 6th, 2024
Its been whirlwind of a week, especially with the 4th falling on a Thursday and confusing my internal clock (it was like a mini weekend!). I managed to do a lot, and though my social battery is zapped, the exhaustion was worth the experiences.
First, the heartbreaking news of Klay Thompson's official departure from the Warriors made it hard to find joy in anything. I'll admit I've cried real tears about it, but like my mom wisely said, "he'll be okay. He makes millions of dollars." And she's right.
Naturally, as my grief about Klay was palpable across the entire country, I had many people reaching out to me offering condolences. One of these people included Dean, my second little (or for those of you not familiar with Greek life terms, a little is like a younger sibling, child, or mentee) from the business fraternity I was a part of at SDSU. He jokingly said he'd have to catch more Mavericks games to watch his "step-dad," and asked if I had time to catch up this week. It was a really nice gesture, and I hadn't seen him in at least two years, so I was excited to see what he's been up to.
We met up for happy hour at a new place in Mission Valley called Gravity Heights. It is a massive space right by Shake Shack and those newer apartments that will cost you about $3k for a studio. For a Wednesday, it was pretty busy, and it was interesting to see the type of people that seemed to be regulars there. The bartender told me most people he sees a lot live within walking distance. This must mean they are some of the lucky folks who don't have to bat an eye about spending an arm and a leg for rent. Lucky bastards. Anyway, I really liked the space, and while I didn't get many photos because I was enjoying my margarita, fries, and my conversation with Dean, I'll share the few I did take.
I'd definitely return to Gravity Heights and try more of their menu. Here is their Yelp Page as well. I loved the open space and being able to relax on a weekday afternoon was great. Catching up with someone I mentored right before the pandemic was amazing. I am so proud of the young man Dean is becoming and feel lucky to have had a small part in his growth through Alpha Kappa Psi. I loved hearing about his post-grad life, and agreed that yes, this real-world, adult stuff is a scam, and we are all victims of it. I like to think I surround myself with good people, and that we all push each other to be the best versions of ourselves, and meeting up with one of my littles reassured me of that.
Secondly, my internal schedule was thrown for a loop as my friends and I celebrated having the 4th off. We are not necessarily feeling very celebratory about America right now, so we just enjoyed having a mini weekend. We went on one of our favorite Seaforth Rentals boats with our go-to Captain Ryan.
Third, this week was the official launch of July, a favorite month of mine because it is full of birthdays! I got to celebrate the first of many birthdays this week at The Med at La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla. It is a very bougie, historical hotel in La Jolla, and it is pink! which was a perfect fit for the birthday girl. We got coffee, drinks, and brunch. We shared some chocolate chip pancakes and a cinnamon roll to start, and I ordered the crab cake BLTA. It was super good.
After brunch at The Med, we walked down the block to Birds Eye Rooftop and enjoyed the sunny weather. It was fun to people-watch from the rooftop. There were tons of people out and about as it was a sunny, summer Saturday.

After all this, I definitely need some recharge time, especially with more friends' and family members' birthdays coming up. I'll probably soak up some energy by the pool with these guaranteed sunny days now that summer is in full swing.
See you next week.
