Week 58: February 4th-10th, 2024
From viral social media posts to articles like this one, anyone can see that San Diego has been growing a great collection of speakeasies. I've been to a couple, but this week my friend Syann and I decided to try a new one called The Grass Skirt in Pacific Beach.
The Grass Skirt doubles as a poke shop counter for to-go orders, while the speakeasy entrance is through the refrigerator door in their kitchen. Immediately, you are transported into a dimly lit stone cave and led through a passageway into the tiki-themed speakeasy. Thank god for heat lamps because we were seated on the patio.

Overall, the food was pretty mid, but the drinks were great. Since we got there pretty early in the evening, we got to enjoy their happy hour deals. We witnessed the tables around us gradually getting filled as we finished our meal. If you do want to check any of these trendy spots out, I suggest making reservations on busy days since wait times can be long.
You can find better photos than mine on Yelp or elsewhere online to get a better idea of the food selection, other drinks and the interior.
In preparation for my friend's birthday (and I guess the Super Bowl), I had to run some errands the next morning. Fighting all of the signs from my body telling me I needed to remain horizontal after a night of drinking, I was set on getting some delicious desserts for Amanda. I planned to get an assortment of mini desserts from Michele Coulon Dessertier in La Jolla. They didn't disappoint.

My two friends Sam and Victoria tagged along to help pick out flavors (lemon chiffon, almond, and black and white), and we ended up walking around La Jolla for a bit afterwards. I think our walk may have helped cure my mini-hangover. We stopped for some lunch at a place called The Spot and soaked up the sun outside. We were overdue for some sunny weather, especially after the recent rains and flooding, so it was really nice to just absorb the sunlight and eat my sandwich.

After refueling at The Spot, we made our way to Bridget's Blooms, which was a gorgeous floral shop we passed on our way into La Jolla that morning. We "Ooh"-ed and "Aah"-ed as we browsed their large selection of flowers. It smelled like fresh flowers and grass in there.
I made a mental note to return to Bridget's Blooms if I need to get unique bouquets for anyone in the future.
Bonus: Look at these funny plant vases I saw at a shop at Bernardo Winery.

I get to enjoy my last bits of freedom before I start my new job (!!!) and hopefully will get to do something fun.
See you next week.
