Week 28: July 9-15, 2023

This week I got my first haircut in what has seemed like years! It wasn't a major change, but my hair is much healthier now. The split ends are all gone and the waves and curls are not weighed down as much. I got about four or five inches off, so my hair now falls a little past my shoulders.

This was a much needed hair cut because I have the tendency to avoid hair salons. And because I use a lot of hot tools on my hair. Even with all the heat protectant spray in the world, the damage is evident from the split ends and coarse texture. My hair is incredibly thick and many stylists haven't done a great job in the past. Luckily, the few hair cuts I have gotten in San Diego have been pretty good, this one included.

Having thick hair means suffering from a constantly sweaty neck, hair fallout all over the floor, and countless broken hair ties. I've gotten really good at tying broken hair ties back together to continue using them.

I booked this hair cut after some Yelp searches lead me to Scisters Salon. It is a local salon and apothecary here in La Mesa. They are a zero-to-low waste company, and have pretty good reviews online.

The salon side of Scisters

When I arrived, I was a little early, so I got a chance to peruse around the apothecary storefront. I was greeted and given a tour of the space, getting more details about their zero-waste practices. They told me Scisters Salon works with a business that comes and picks up any unavoidable waste and specially recycles it.

The apothecary had skincare, beauty tools and all-natural makeup

It is amazing how much waste comes from salons, including human hair! Empty product bottles must add up quickly as well. Luckily, cut human hair is really useful in helping clean up oil spills in the ocean. Also, the products sold at Scisters are sold by the ounce, so you are able to bring your own reusable containers to fill up. This greatly reduces the number of empty bottles that need to be recycled, or worse, end up in landfills.

My stylist was named Irelan, and was from Fort Collins, Colorado. Irelan was great at listening to my babbling about my hair's history, and did a great job with my hair cut. It was very relaxing when my hair was washed and dried. I even got a small scalp massage!

Here's Irelan's business card!

Alongside getting a much-needed hair cut, I got a much-needed burger. tried Five Guys for the first time this week. With my healthier-looking locks, I walked into the Five Guys in El Cajon and immediately noticed everyone eating shelled peanuts. I guess that is their "thing?" I hadn't heard of that before, but cool. Peanuts are cool.

My burger was good, but not great. I got a BLT burger with cheese and noticed my bacon was almost too crunchy and crispy. The cheese was also not melted all the way. However, the Cajun fries were delicious and paired nicely with the Oreo milkshake.

My not-so-melty cheese & BLT burger

I didn't get a scoop of the shelled peanuts from the huge boxes inside, but maybe next time I will (if there is a next time - I wasn't too impressed, honestly. In-N-Out is better...and cheaper...)

Because it has been so hot the past couple days, the extra weight off of my hair has been great. I like to picture the few inches of my hair singlehandedly cleaning up an entire oil spill somewhere in the ocean. BP better watch out.

See you next week.
