Week 25: June 18th-24th, 2023
This week I finally had the chance to see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. I remember loving the first movie so much and I could not wait for this one to come out.
Once again, just like back when I saw the first movie, I was absolutely blown away. The art was incredible. I loved how so many different animation styles were used to portray different universes. The clever, heartfelt script took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. The entire movie felt nostalgic, almost like a hug, while still managing to be a refreshing work of art.

One of my favorite Easter eggs in the movie was one I felt proud of for noticing on my own. There is a scene where Miles' roommate is playing a very specific video game in the background as the two have a quick conversation. The video game is the Spider-Man game, which I've played before and love. I knew I recognized that mini-map!
Spider-Punk and the city of Mumbattan were works of genius. To add another insane level of genius to this multi-universed movie, I saw online that there is apparently more than one version of the movie out in theatres. The differences are small enough that they do not change the overall storyline, but it is even more reason to see the movie many times over again.
I'm not a film critic, just someone with a deep love for great animation and great superhero movies, so I'll let the experts speak for me.
This article by Alison Willmore is a beautifully written piece that reflects what I want to say almost perfectly.
Here is another article written on Wired that I also thought was nice.
I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but just know that the glowing reviews online are right. Go see it if you haven't already. This movie was truly incredible and was a great way to continue the Spider-Verse legacy. It was a masterful work of culture, color, sound, and story. If there is one movie of the year so far for me, it is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. We'll have to see if the Barbie movie will give this one a run for its money, because it is also destined to be great.
See you next week.
