Week 145: October 5th-11th, 2025

Another week, another monotony-adjacent routine broken up by small events like getting dinner with a friend. A midweek get together is always nice to keep the week feeling fresh, so my friend Syann and I got an early dinner in Point Loma at Kiiro Sushi Izakaya.

I didn't have that many expectations, because this was just a last minute selection for our casual weeknight dinner, but Kiiro Sushi Izakaya was so good. While the location isn't ideal for me (there is always traffic in Point Loma...), it is in a nice building in the business district on Sports Arena Blvd.

While I didn't get much information about the restaurant from our server (to be fair, I didn't ask) or do much research beforehand, a simple Google search also led me to find this article by one Darryl Gordon on his SD Foodie Fan site. It honestly describes the restaurant perfectly, and fairly states that Kiiro Sushi may be one of the best sushi spots in town. The Yelp page for the restaurant also shows a 4.6 out of 5 star rating. The chef, Kyung Tae (or "Chef KT") Lee, showcases the restaurant's offerings on Instagram, but I don't think the photos do it justice.

It is possible that I was just really hungry, and that it doesn't take much to impress me, but I do genuinely think that this food was excellent. The fish was fresh, and everything we ate tasted amazing. I ordered a classic, a dragon roll, and Syann got a "salmon lover" roll paired with a Sapporo. We shared appetizers of sea salted edamame, crispy rice with spicy tuna, and agedashi tofu. Unfortunately I did not get a photo of my dragon roll or the agedashi tofu because I was too busy eating and enjoying the food. I know, I know... I broke the cardinal rule of "phone eats first..."

Our server was a stern-looking older Korean woman who was surprisingly soft-spoken and kept our water cups full. The other staff cleared our dishes fast, but not in an invasive way, and I felt well taken care of. Despite the menus being well-loved and well-used to the point of water damage between the lamination, I felt like the place was top notch. Our total was less than $75 for two people (with a drink, two entrees, and three appetizers!) which was surprising because I've become so accustomed to spending $60+ on myself every time I go out to eat. Before tip, it was only $72.20, which seemed like a great deal for such good sushi. Next time I go, I want to try the "No Rice Rolls" section to feel like a healthy legend.

Bonus: the Harvest Supermoon on October 6th was awesome. My silly photo of the moon from my balcony did NOT do her justice.

Anyways, see you next week.
