Week 11: March 12-18th, 2023

I may have cheated myself this week by not having a set plan or scheduled time where I would do something new. A good thing about making a New Year's resolution is that they're customizable. I make the rules here, and I suppose that means I can also bend them. Also, not planning is also a new thing for me, technically... So that counts too, right?

I may be getting ahead of myself and not giving myself (and these bendable rules) enough credit. The reason I feel like I'm bending the rules is that I didn't actively plan to go do something new. I did end up going to multiple new places, but we just as easily could've gone to bars we've been to before.

Maybe this is a non-issue relating to quality over quantity. Maybe having a bunch of little new experiences this week is equivalent to the weight of just one massive, amazing, earth-shattering experience. I suppose knowing this and being okay with it has value as well. Sometimes doing new things isn't absolutely groundbreaking. And sometimes, (probably most of the time, actually) it isn't planned! And it doesn't have to be! It can just be simple and fun.

I went to two new bars in Downtown San Diego on St. Patrick's Day. It was a phenomenal sea of green, gold, glitter, and beer. The combination of it being a holiday during Spring Break season and a Friday night meant we were in store for a busy night in Downtown.

I won't include a breakdown of every place we went because that might be a bit boring. I will just focus on the "new" here.

Between our St. Patrick's day bar hopping, we had to eat a real dinner, so we sat downstairs at Rustic Root. I hadn't been to the downstairs section of the restaurant before, so it was cool to see that for the first time. It was definitely a different (warmer!) vibe than the rooftop area. Though it was not my first time there (and I ordered a plate that I've had before), I feel like Rustic Root does need an honorable mention this week. The Wild Boar Bolognese is to die for. Plus, the inside area downstairs doesn't have fire pits where rogue napkins get set on fire. Those of you who heard about or were at my graduation dinner remember that story.

[For those of you who weren't, here is a brief summary: My graduation dinner at Rustic Root on their rooftop. No barriers around fire pit at our table. Dinner is going relatively well. Suddenly... FIRE! A fellow patron on the rooftop had to help our server extinguish the flames. Everyone was shocked but alright. Well... except for the napkin.]

The bar hopping continued and our hops included Whiskey Girl, Tempo Cantina, and Omerta, which were all new for me. All three were fun, but honestly, this is not surprising. Fortunately, any time I'm with my friends, dressed up for a holiday and drinking, having fun is pretty much guaranteed. However, unfortunately for you, I did not take any photos for reference other than this one, where the glory of my bright green tie-dye pants is severely crushed by the pink lighting at Tempo Cantina.

Any excuse to dress up, see my friends, and go out downtown will always be a win. I especially love St. Patrick's Day because gold and green are some of my favorite colors and make regular appearances in my wardrobe.

I look forward to what I may (or may not!) plan in the coming weeks. Hopefully it will include more opportunities for ridiculous pants and good food.

See you next week.
