Week 10: March 5-11, 2023

Despite having a hard week, I was still able to stick to my resolution. It is so nice to continue exploring San Diego and doing new things. This resolution has turned into a form of self-care, where I am ensuring I take time to do something new and fun every week.

This week, my new experience was going to dinner with Syann at a restaurant called La Puerta. It lies on the border of Mission Hills and Hillcrest in a renovated industrial building. I was thrilled that the restaurant was close to Syann's apartment, so we were able to walk.

Inside La Puerta

For someone who appreciates a well-designed space, La Puerta is an absolute gem. There were tall ceilings, wood and metal textures, and tons of plants throughout the space. I was so busy chatting away with my friend and perusing the menu that I forgot to take more photos. The ones I have here don't fully capture the whole vibe of the space, but they really leaned into the industrial-chic vibe, and played up a lot of rock-inspired statement décor.

Our server was a jolly guy in an Outkast t-shirt who kept reminding us of the happy hour deals every day from 3-5pm "and also after 9pm!" We promised to return another day to take advantage of the 50% off drinks.

I'll admit I forgot to take my own photos besides the one below of my taco plate, so I pulled the rest from Yelp.

Taqueso Pollo Tacos

I ordered the Taqueso Pollo tacos. They were delicious. Each plate included refried beans, rice, and rajas. The Taqueso Pollo plate had "grilled chicken in crispy fried jack cheese, avocado, [and] chipotle crema." It paired excellently with my (not pictured, but still delicious) frozen margarita.

Being a young professional trying to maintain a social life can be challenging, but even despite a long work week, it felt almost easy. I got to enjoy good food in a cool place while catching up with one of my closest friends. We vented about our work frustrations, offered advice, and shared stories under the close watch of musical icons like (a mariachi-version of) Kiss.

I definitely needed a pick me up after a hard week at work, and La Puerta came through. It was such a fun mix of Mexican cuisine, rock music culture and industrial architecture. Come on, who doesn't love good friends, good music, and good tacos?

See you next week.
